Abstract

770,955. Coating with metals. COMMONWEALTH ENGINEERING CO. OF OHIO. April 9, 1954, No. 10543/54. Class 82(2) A process of metal coating from gaseous metal compounds includes the step of cleaning the metal surface before coating by simultaneous application of heat and vacuum to remove occluded gases. The initial heating in a vacuum is succeeded by a further heating, still under vacuum, to raise the article above the decomposition temperature of the compound (metal carbonyl). Nickel, cobalt, chromium, iron, tungsten and molybdenum are coated on to iron, steel or other metal. The article 10 is placed in chamber 11 evacuated by a pump 13 drawing the air through a plurality of outlets via a refrigerated trap 16 to condense any carbonyl vapour. The carbonyl is admitted at 20. A cooling coil 23 keeps the chamber temperature to below the carbonyl decomposition temperature whilst the object is being treated to a plating temperature by radiant lamps 18.
