1277375 Vapour deposition of metals COCKERILL-OUGREE PROVIDENCE ET ESPERANCE-LONGDOZ EN ABREGE COCKERILL 27 Jan 1970 [24 Feb 1969] 3984/70 HeadingC7F In a method for vapour deposition coating of a vertically disposed elongated metal article, e. g. a steel strip or wire 4, at a pressure of 10<SP>-1</SP> to 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr, a source 8 of metallic atoms is arranged around the article, and metallic atoms which have passed the article and not condensed directly on it are deflected back towards the article. Metal in crucibles 8 is heated by electron beams, and the deflector means are provided by the hood 11 which is desirably heated electrically by source 13. The strip 4 may be heated by electron gun 22 to enhance adhesion of the coating, which may be further improved by subjection of the coating metal vapour to ionizing device 15 and making strip 4 negative (via a connection to transport roller 6) and the hood 11 positive, thereby repelling metal vapour from the hood and attracting it to the strip, e. g. for Ni coating the hood may be at +100V, and the strip at -500V. The whole assembly of Fig. 2 is mounted in an evacuable chamber.
