Abstract

432,466. Coating metals with metals; coating non-metallic surfaces with metals. SOMMER, L. A., 23, Haderslebenerstrasse, Dahlem, Berlin.-(Assignee of Kuchenmeister, C. Leyst- ; 12, Friedrich Wilhelmstrasse, Berlin) July 13, 1934, Nos. 20537, 20538, and 20539. Convention dates, July 13, 1933, Aug. 11, 1933, and Sept. 20, 1933. [Class 82 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVI] Metals or non-metallic substances are coated with metal by exposure to metallic vapour produced by melting the coating metal and evaporating it in a high vacuum corresponding to a pressure of 10<-6> to 10<-27> mm. of mercury. In the apparatus shown the metal 7 is evaporated in a ceramic crucible 5 heated by an electric resistance 6. A web 8 of material is passed from a roller 9 to a roller 10 and is cooled when passing over the crucible 5 by contact with a reentrant part 11 of the chamber 1 filled with liquid air. The metallization is furthered by provision of a grating electrode 13 charged positively to the molten metal to a potential of several thousand volts. The chamber 1 is made of steel or bronze free from pores tinned on the inside and if desired on the outside also. Insulating-materials so coated may be further coated by electrolysis.
