Abstract
474,834. Electrode materials. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and KING, E. B. May 11, 1936, No. 13301. [Class 39 (i)] A secondary electron-emitting surface of a metallic hydride is produced on an electrode by enclosing the electrode in an envelope and admitting hydrogen to form the required hydride. Metals of the second and third groups of the periodic table may be used. Metal electrodes may be degassed in vacuo and treated with hydrogen, the formation of hydride being produced by heat or by an electric discharge between the electrode and another electrode within the envelope. The metal of the hydride, for example, potassium or caesium, may be evaporated in vacuo or, for example, in the case of copper, it may be sputtered on to an electrode of another metal, and the thickness of the layer of hydride may be regulated by controlling the temperature or stopping the discharge current. The electrode may be treated with hydrogen in the discharge tube itself or in a separate vessel. The Provisional Specification refers to the formation of secondary electron-emitting surfaces by covering electrodes consisting in the main of metal or other substances with thin layers of non- metallic substances in general.
