[Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge tube comprises an oxide cathode and one or more metallic electrodes, in which the metallic surface of one or more of these electrodes is at least partly coated with a layer of soot directly precipitated thereon from the atmosphere surrounding a flame. The coated surfaces are preferably those that can be struck by barium vaporizing from the cathode, particularly the portion, e.g. of the anode, facing the cathode. The soot layer may be produced by holding the surface of the electrode above burning turpentine.
