Abstract

485,439. Thermionic cathodes. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 30, 1937, No. 23722. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] An indirectly heated cathode of the type in which the electron-emitting surface is carried on a base of copper or a copper alloy of less thermal emissivity than nickel, which is only partly coated with the electron-emitting substance, is protected against the volatilization of the base metal from those parts not coated with the electron-emitting substance, by coating them with an insulating substance such as magnesia and alumina. Preferably, the body of the cathode is tubular and surrounds the heater. The emitting substance, such as barium carbonate, and the insulating layer are applied by cataphoresis.
