Abstract

420,289. Thermionic cathodes. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Sept. 3, 1934, No. 25343. Convention date, Sept. 7, 1933. [Class 39 (i)] A cathode having an activated surface is constituted by a body consisting of carbon, for instance graphite, and an insulated heater wire inserted in cavities in the body. The cathode may be shaped as a container coated internally and externally with oxides, and a cavity in it may contain a roll of metal gauze coated with oxide. The graphite may be covered with copper to which a nickel layer is applied. As shown, a graphite block 1 having a cavity 2 is covered with a nickel layer 7 to which the oxide layer 7 is applied. The heater wire is inserted in a cavity 4 and is insulated by a baked on insulating material, such as porcelain. The walls of the cathode may be provided with a large number of small cavities to increase the emitting surface. The invention is particularly applicable to gas-filled tubes.
