Abstract
1425095 Replenishing an evaporation bath ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICHDUDELANGE SA and COCKERILL-OUGREEPROVIDENCE SA 8 Feb 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 6345/73 Heading C7F A bath for vaporization of a metal or alloy in vacuum vapour deposition apparatus is replenished by continuous feeding of a wire or filament which is heated by heating means, different from those which heat the bath, immediately prior to being fed to the bath. The melting temperature of the wire may exceed 1200‹C, and it may be heated such that the temperature difference between the wire and the bath is less than 1000‹C, the evaporated metal may be Cr/Ni 80/20, and a continuous steel sheet substrate may be coated. As shown, wire from reel 1 is fed into vacuum chamber 3 via gas tight seal 2, into a bath of metal 7 heated by an electron beam from source 8, the wire being heated by an electric current flowing between spaced contacts 5 and 6; alternatively the heating means may be an induction coil or a second electron beam Figs. 2 + 3 respectively, (not shown).
