Abstract

In an indirectly heated cathode in which a heater wire 3 is insulated by a metal oxide layer 6 from a support 1 carrying emissive material 4, the surface of the support 1 which faces the heater wire comprises molybdenum coated with a layer 5 of at least one of the metals of the platinum group having a thickness of at least 3 ÁThe layer 5, e.g. of platinum, is applied in the non-molten state, e.g. by deposition from a suspension or by electroplating, and also is not subjected to any subsequent melting. Preferably, the heater wire has a coating of metal of the platinum group, which has been applied in the non-molten state and then melted, underlying the metal oxide layer 6, which may be of Al 2 O 3 or MgO. Emissive layer 4 may comprise a mixture of nickel powder and alkaline earth metal oxides. The cathode may be a dispenser cathode.
