Abstract

976,527. Cathode heaters. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. June 20, 1963 [June 20, 1962], No. 24617/63. Drawings to Specification. Heading H5H. A heating element for an indirectly-heated cathode comprises a core of refractory wire, e.g. tungsten, molybdenum or alloys thereof, a layer of insulating material, e.g. aluminium oxide, and a barrier film of noble metal, such as gold, platinum or rhenium, between the wire and the insulating layer. The film of noble metal preferably amounts to from 0.2% to 4% by weight of the wire. In the process of forming the heating element, the barrier film may be vapour-deposited, electroplated, or otherwise affixed to the refractory wire, which is then coated by a spray, immersion, cataphoretic, drag or other depositing process with a volatile binder suspension containing the insulating material. Subsequently the wire is heated to volatize the binder constituents, harden the insulating layer, and adhere the layer to the barrier film. During the fabrication of the actual cathode assembly, the element is heated to a temperature sufficient to vaporize the noble metal which disperses into the insulating layer and deposits on the inner surface of the cathode sleeve, thereby rendering the insulating layer relatively inert and lowering the field emission characteristics of the said inner surface.
