Abstract
1,142,728. Thermionic cathode constructions. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 19 Aug., 1966 [23 Aug., 1965], No. 37325/66. Heading H1D. [Also in Division C7] A cathode assembly 14 comprises a thermionic cathode 15 mounted on a sleeve 18 surrounding a refractory metal heater wire 17 having a coating of minute refractory metal particles bonded to its surface to reduce its operating temperature. An oxide type cathode assembly 14 for use in a reflux type klystron comprises a Ni button 15 coated with a thermionic emissive material 16, mounted on a Ni sleeve 18 containing the W, Rh or Rh-W alloy heater wire 17. The wire is coated with W, Mo or Rh particles which increase the adhesion of a subsequent Al 2 O 3 coating. The wire may be in contact with or spaced from and supported in the tube. The particle layer can be applied either by dipping the bare wire in a suspension of W powder in xylene and methacrylate then firing in H 2 at 1500 C. or by cataphoretic deposition from a suspension of W powder in methanol with yttrium nitrate, Al(NO 3 ) 3 and water using an Al anode then firing in wet NH 3 at 1650 C. The fired heaters may be redipped in H 2 WO 4 and NH 4 OH and retired. The Al 2 O 3 coating may be cataphoretically or vapour deposited.
