Abstract
1378620 Cathode materials PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 25156/73 Heading H1D [Also in Division C7] A cathode is formed by cataphoretically depositing LaB 6 on the bend of a Rh "hairpin" heater wire; gradually raising the temperature to 1500‹ C. to sinter the cathode and form smooth shiny surface; cataphoretically depositing a further layer of pure LaB 6 and heating to 1500‹ C. During sintering a barrier layer of Rh boride forms. For coating a suspension of LaB 6 in methanol is used. The cathode is activated by heating at 1500‹ C. for 5-30 minutes or by electron bombardment. The cathode is used in X-ray and rectifier À tubes, electron microscopes and electron beam welding apparatus.
