Abstract

Objects are coated with metal by heating them in the presence of the vapour of the carbonyl of the coating metal, the carbonyl being mixed with an indifferent gas in such proportions that the partial pressure of the carbonyl is between about 0,5 and 4 mm. of mercury. The thickness of the coating can be controlled by varying the partial pressure of the carbonyl, the duration of the treatment, and the temperature to which the object is heated. The deposition of molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, nickel, cobalt, iron, thorium, and the rare metals is referred to.
