Abstract

The exhaust gases of an internal-combustion engine, mixed with air, if desired, are passed through a casing which contains a catalyst comprising a closely packed mass of metal turnings, borings, shavings, wires, or the like, made into a coherent porous and sponge-like mass by being heated in an oxidizing atmosphere. The catalyst is formed of one or more of the following:--cast iron, wrought iron, steel, alloys of iron and aluminium, alloys of iron, copper and nickel, alloys of iron, copper and cobalt, alloys of iron, copper and chromium, and/or any other metallic alloy containing any of these metals with one or more other metals which metals and/or alloys are characterized by (1) having a high melting point about 1300 DEG C. and (2) having the property of cohering together when heated in closely packed masses in the presence of an oxidizing atmosphere at a high temperature but below the fusion point. The catalyst may also contain a more active non-metallic catalyst such as activated bauxite or aluminous catalyst and is formed either (1) by placing the materials in the casing and preparing the sponge-like catalyst in situ by the passage of the hot exhaust gases; (2) by carrying the more active catalysts by a current of gas into the sponge-like catalyst or (3) by treating the sponge-like catalyst with a solution containing the more active catalyst and then drying and igniting. Specification 405,976 is referred to.
