Abstract

279,490. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Sykes, W. P.). Oct. 22, 1926, [Convention date]. Hardening.-In a method of making hard alloys of iron with tungsten or molybdenum, which are free from or very low in carbon, a body of the metals in close association is heated to a temperature at which a solid solution of one metal in another will take place, then rapidly cooled, and afterwards raised to and maintained at an intermediate temperature. For example, an alloy consisting of molybdenum, and less than 0.02 per cent of carbon may be made from a mixture of iron and molybdenum powders by heating the pressed bar to about 1410‹ C. in hydrogen for one hour, quenching in water, and heating for sixty hours at about 600‹ C.
