Abstract

276,011. Schrobsdorff, W. April 23, 1928. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 13, 1927]. Alloys.-Hard alloys are made by melting carbides of refractory metals, such as tantalum, niobium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, or uranium, with less than their own weight of the corresponding metals. Part of the refractory metals or carbides may be replaced by cobalt, nickel, chromium, or iron, or by a carbide of cobalt, chromium, or iron. The alloys may be made by forming an alloy of the metals and adding this to the carbides; or two alloys each containing a carbide and a metal may be melted together. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes hard alloys of carbides of refractory metals such as tungsten and molybdenum, not containing free carbon, and containing also a metal which does not form a carbide at below 3000‹ C., for example metals of the platinum group or noble metals down to copper. Niobium or niobium carbide may also be present. Some of the metals may be used in the form of reducible compounds, and in some cases the carbides may be formed by starting with the powdered metals and using a carburizing atmosphere in the melting process. The alloys are cast at a temperature 50‹ C. above the melting point. Alloys of the following compositions are referred to; (1) tungsten carbide, iron carbide, tantalum, nickel, iridium; (2) tantalum, niobium, copper, platinum, molybdenum-tungsten double carbide, iron carbide, chromium carbide; (3) tungsten carbide, platinum, tantalum, niobium carbide; (4) tungsten carbide, tantalum, nickel, niobium carbide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 264,528 and 270,640.
