Abstract
An engineering component is made by casting an aluminium alloy with an insert of a nitridable ferrous alloy and then subjecting the component to a nitriding treatment to nitride the insert and heat-treat the aluminium alloy. The insert may be given an oxide or phosphate treatment before the casting operation. The nitriding treatment may be by the ammonia gas process or by immersion in a molten cyanide bath, and may be followed by quenching.
