Abstract

An aluminium coating on an iron and steel base is produced by subjecting the latter to an atmosphere of nascent nitrogen at 950 to 1150 DEG F. to produce a nitrogenised film, coating with aluminium and heating the coated base to 400 to 950 DEG F., preferably for a period of thirty minutes to ten hours, to bond the coating to the base. The aluminium coating may be produced by spraying, or dipping into molten metal. The iron and steel treated has a low carbon content and a negligible aluminium content and after treatment is in a form suitable for deep drawing.
