Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable inexpensive Al alloy surface hardening of high quality with enhanced work efficiency by forming a coated layer of iron or the like on the surface of an Al alloy followed by nitriding and aging at a specified temp. CONSTITUTION:A coated layer of iron or its alloy is formed on the surface of an Al alloy, and the surface of the layer is nitrided in a nitriding atmosphere such as NH3 gas or a cyanide bath heated to the soln. heat treatment temp. of the Al alloy. Aging is then carried out at the aging temp. of the alloy. Thus, nitriding and aging can be performed combinedly without deteriorating the alloy, the work efficiency is enhanced, and the bonding strength of the alloy to the coated layer is increased, so inexpensive surface hardening of high quality is enabled.
