Abstract

A method of making stainless steel articles comprises compacting a mixture consisting of low carbon, low oxygen iron powder, 11-25 per cent of powdered chromium, 0-2.5 per cent of powdered nickel, at a pressure above 50 tons per sq. in., sintering the compact at a temperature above 2000 DEG F. in a hydrogen atmosphere having a dew point below -25 DEG F., coining at above 60 tons per sq. in., and carburizing at above 2000 DEG F. in an atmosphere of hydrogen having a dew point below -15 DEG F. and in the presence of, but out of contact with, solid carbon. The carburized article may be given a homogenizing treatment in a molten salt bath. The chromium and nickel may be added as powdered elementary metals or as powdered ferro alloys. It is stated that the reducing atmosphere during sintering is critical and must be free from oxygen and moisture. The hydrogen atmosphere may be obtained by passing the hydrogen over a palladium catalyst to cause the oxygen to combine with hydrogen and then over activated alumina to remove moisture. In addition to iron, chromium and nickel the alloy may also contain silicon (1 per cent max.), sulphur, phosphorus, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, columbium, zirconium, cobalt, up to a total of not more than 5 per cent. U.S.A. Specifications 2,333,573, 2,411,073 and 2,489,839 are referred to.
