Abstract

1,120,648. Induction heating. L'ELECTROREFRACTAIRE. 20 Dec., 1965 [29 Dec., 1964], No. 53916/65. Heading H5H. Materials having low conductivity when cold, e.g. oxides of Al, Zr, Mg, W, Th, are melted in an induction furnace by associating with the main charge an auxiliary charge of a material which has a high conductivity when cold and undergoes an exothermic reaction with the atmosphere when heated. The auxiliary charge may consist of a powdered or granulated metal such as A1, Zr, Mg, W or Si and is preferably one which reacts to form the oxide or one of the oxides constituting the main charge. It may be deposited above the main charge or in a hole formed in the centre of the charge.
