Abstract
Terephthalic acid in the form of a potassium salt is prepared by heating potassium trimellitate in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature above 250 DEG C. The potassium terephthalate is converted to the acid by known methods. Specified non-oxidizing atmospheres are nitroen and carbon dioxide. The reaction is preferably carried out at a pressure of at least 15 atmospheres. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of heat transfer assistants such as sand and carborundum powder and/or isomerization catalysts such as iron, zinc, titanium, lead and mercury and oxides thereof. Up to 20% of water may be present during the reaction. The Provisional Specification mentions the use as starting material of a mixture of potassium trimellitate and potassium benzoate.
