Abstract

A process for removing volatile impurities from beryllium comprises powdering the beryllium under reduced pressure and heating the product at a temperature below its sintering temperature for a period sufficient to allow escape of the volatile impurities. These impurities may be halogens, e.g. chlorine. The size of the beryllium powder is preferably below 150 m . The temperature may be between 700 DEG C. and 950 DEG C. and the reduced pressure below 10 m of mercury. A getter may be present in the furnace used for heating, e.g. uranium or titanium.
