Abstract

<PICT:0839414/III/1> A process for working up dilute aqueous hydrazine solutions comprises the steps of (1) holding an aqueous solution of hydrazine containing acetone for a finite time in the homogeneous liquid state, distilling at least part of said solution; (2) adding acetone to the distillate, holding this treated distillate for a finite time in the homogeneous liquid state and then distilling at least part thereof. In a preferred embodiment, a charging vessel 1 containing 2% hydrazine hydrate aqueous solution and 50 grams/litre of acetone, is held for at least 10 minutes before commencing operations. This solution is then supplied continuously to an upper column 2 and holding vessels 3a and 3b in which the solution may remain for a time, the holding vessels being constantly charged with acetone from vessels 7a and 7b respectively. Sump flask 6 is heated by a gas flame and a discharge substantially free from hydrazine and acetone is withdrawn at such a rate that the flask is always half full. The distillate consisting of 120-160 grams of hydrazine hydrate and 360-480 grams of acetone per litre is collected in the receiver 5.
