561,227. Chlorine dioxide. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. Oct. 30, 1942, No. 15318. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1941. [Class 1 (ii)] Chlorine dioxide is obtained by reacting a chlorite of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal with a persulphate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in the presence of water at a pH between about 3 and 11. A buffer salt may be employed to ensure the correct pH ; a stream of air is passed through the reactants to carry off the chlorine dioxide which may be absorbed in a tower.
