555,764. Softening water. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd., and HOLMES, E. L. March 5, 1942, No. 2915- [Class 46] In softening water by addition of lime and causing the calcium carbonate produced to crystallise on nuclei suspended in the water, a soluble calcium salt, preferably calcium chloride, is added to the water before or with the lime for converting magnesium bicarbonate into calcium bicarbonate, from which calcium carbonate is produced by reaction with the lime and crystallises on the nuclei. Any sodium bicarbonate in the water will also be converted into calcium bicarbonate if sufficient calcium salt is added. The amount of lime required is reduced by the use of the calcium salt.
