Abstract

A chromate coating is formed on a surface of aluminium or aluminium base alloy by treatment, e.g. spraying at 70-130 DEG F. or immersion, with an aqueous acid solution containing hexavalent chromium ions, e.g. 1-10 g./1. CrO3, and fluoride ions, e.g. 0.05-5 g./1. F, together with an aliphatic a -amino acid in which one or both of the H atoms of the amino group may be substituted, such as glycine, sarcosine or EDTA, e.g. 0.1-10 g./1. Hexavalent chromium may be introduced into solution as CrO3 or a dichromate, e.g. K2Cr2O7, while fluoride may be derived from HF, a simple fluoride, a fluosilicate, e.g. H2SiF6 and/ or a fluoborate, e.g. HBF4. The amino acid may be introduced as such as as an alkali metal salt, e.g. of Na. Specification 846,363 is referred to.
