Abstract

The coating of aluminium using an aqueous solution containing from 0,15-12,5 grams per litre of fluoride iron, from 2-60 grams per litre of hexavalent chromium (expressed as CrO3) and from 2-285 grams per litre of phosphate (expressed as PO4), and having a pH of 0,8-4,5, is controlled so as to ensure production of powder free coatings over a prolonged period by contacting the solution intermittently or continuously with a cation exchange resin to which there is also added both potassium and sodium in amounts such that aluminium dissolved in the solution in excess of 1 gram per litre is precipitated. Sodium and potassium fluorides are added in a molar ratio of as near 2 as possible, intermittently, whenever the concentration of dissolved aluminium approaches or exceeds 1 gram per litre, in the minimum amount necessary to precipitate the aluminium. The contact with ion exchange resin may be maintained by continuously withdrawing a portion of the solution, passing it over the resin and returning it. Specifications 632,097, 632,102, 708,937, 803,405, 832,485 and 851,027 are referred to.
