Abstract
A solution for phosphating surfaces of steel, zinc or aluminium or any two of all three of these simultaneously or successively, comprises ammonium primary phosphate, fluoride, an accelerator consisting of a soluble tungsten or molybdenum compound, and at least one complexing agent for zinc in acid solution, the solution also being free of alkali metal ions. The complexing agent may be ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, diothylene triamine pentacetic acid, gluconic acid, glucoheptonic acid, tartaric acid, dihydroxy tartaric acid or citric acid, the solution containing 0À25 to 6 g/l in total of the complexing agent. The fluoride is preferably ammonium fluoride or hifluoride although ammonium fluoborate or silicofluoride may be used.
