Abstract
1,125,230. Phosphating aluminium & its alloys. AMCHEM PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 17, 1966 [Oct. 26, 1965], No. 46319/66. Heading C7U. Fine grained zinc phosphate coatings are formed on aluminium and its alloys in a two stage process comprising 1) treating with an aqueous solution of a phosphate/titanium activator containing 0.45- 4.5 gms/ litre phosphate and 0.005 - 0.05 gms/ litre titanium and then without intermediate rinsing 2) treating with an aqueous nitrate accelerated zinc phosphate solution containing at least 3 gms/ litre silicofluoride ion (preferably 4 - 6 gms/ 1), 0À06 to 0.2 gms/litre ferrous ion and 0.01 - 5 gms/ litre of free fluoride ion. The phosphate/ titanium activators consist essentially of the dried residue of a solution or dispersion of a soluble or part soluble titanium compound in an aqueous solution consisting at least mainly of disodium orthophosphate or pyrophosphate e. g. titanium potassium oxalate and disodium phosphate. The silicofluoride ions are supplied in the form of alkali metal or ammonium silicofluoride or as fluosilicic acid. The free fluoride is supplied as hydrofluoric acid or a simple salt and the ferrous ion as ferrous sulphate.
