Abstract

1,156,356. Modifying metallic surfaces. LUBRIZOL CORP. Nov. 9, 1967 [Jan. 6, 1967], No. 51096/67. Heading C7U. The surface of a metal such as Fe, Cd, Zn and Al is given a black matte finish by treating with an aqueous acidic solution of a trivalent antimony salt prior to forming a phosphate coating. The pre-treating solution preferably contains 0À3 - 10 gms/1 of S6C1 3 and 25 - 80 gms/1 HC1. The acids H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 are unsuitable for the solution. The solution may also contain 0À3 - 0À4 gms SnCl 2 per gm. of S6Cl 3 . The solution used for phosphating is an aqueous acidic solution containing phosphate ions, usually with ions of Zn, Mn, Li, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Cd, Ba, Ni, Na, NH 4 , nitrite, nitrate chlorate, ferrocyanide, ferricyanide, chloride and hydroxide. It preferably contains 0À1 - 0À4% by weight Zn and 0À005 - 2% of Ni. The blackened and phophated surface is rinsed with water and treated with an aqueous chromate or chromic acid solution and/or a "water soluble oil" which is a term generic to a number of complex metal salts of mineral acid (especially phosphoric acid) esters, said salts being soluble or dispersible in water and in organic solvents. Examples of these are given in U.S.A. Specifications 2, 080, 299; 2, 820, 723; 2, 861, 907 and 3, 215, 715.
