Abstract

1,164,726. Modifying metallic surfaces. M & T CHEMICALS Inc. Oct. 4, 1967 [March 24, 1967], No.45119/67. Heading C7U. Aluminium or an alloy thereof is coated using a solution (pH 0À8 to 1À6) made up from a mixture of (parts by weight) chromic acid 2 to 12, phosphate ion 0À6 to 6, fluoride ion 0À6 to 8, and borate 0À5 to 50. The chromic acid may be formed by using potassium or sodium dichromate. The phosphate ion may be from phosphoric acid, mono or disodium or mono-or dipotassium phosphate or diammonium phosphate. The fluoride ion may be HF, KF, KHF 2 , NaF, NaHF 2 or NH 4 F. The borate ion may be boric acid or sodium, potassium or ammonium phosphoborates. The pH may be controlled by adding HF, HNO 3 or sodium carbonate. The Al may contain Cu, Cr, Zn, Ni, Mg, Si or Mn and may be a vapour deposited film on steel. The Al surface may be first cleaned in trichlorothylene and then in an alkali.
