Abstract
1,214,674. Modifying metallic surfaces. GERHARD COLLARDIN G.m.b.H. March 8, 1968 [March 10, 1967], No.11306/68. Heading C7U. A phosphate coating is formed on a ferrous metal or on Zn or Zn alloy by treating with a solution comprising Zn, phosphate and nitrate ions and by weight 0À005-0À05% NO 2 <SP>-</SP>, 0À01-0À2% of a glycerophosphate and 0À002-0À075% of a non-ionic wetting agent and having a total acid: free acid ratio of 8:1 to 12:1. Glycerophates usable include di-sodium glycerophosphate, the mono-sodium salt of glycerolmonophosphoric acid and the monopotassium, di-potassium, mono-ammonium and diammonium salts of glycerolmonophospheric acid. 0À01-0À25% by weight of complex fluorides such as hydrofluoboric acid and sluosilicic acid may be included in the solution, which may be in water. The solution may be sprayed on to the treated metal ar 35-90‹C for 0À5-10 minutes, and the same solution composition may be used to degrease the treated metal before spraying. Preferred wetting agents are ethylene oxide adducts of fatty alcohols, alkylphenol polyglycerols with OH-values from 900 to 1200 and polypropyleneglycols, or ethylene oxide - propylene oxide adducts of fatty alcohols, alkylphenols and polyglycerols with OH-values from 900 to 1200. An adduct of dodecylphenol with 9 molethyhene oxide/8 mol propylene oxide, an adduct of oleylalcohol with 12 molethylene oxide and an adduct of addition of ethylene oxide to polypropylene glylcol are specifically mentioned. The layers produced may be treated with chromic acid and/or phosphoric acid or solutions of acid chromates and/or phosphates and may be electropheretically lacquered.
