Abstract
1297715 Phosphating aluminium, steel or zinc surfaces CHUBB FIRE SECURITY Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970] 3727/71 Divided out of 1296883 Heading C7U A process for coating a surface consisting predominantly of aluminium, steel, or zinc comprises employing a solution containing phosphate, zinc, chlorate, nitrate, and fluoride in the ratios by weight of P 2 O 5 = 1, Zn = 0À2-0À7, ClO 3 = 0À2-0À7, NO 3 = 0À1-0À4, and F = 0À1-0À4, the total acid points being 8-25 times the free acid points. The total acid points and free acid points are defined as the numbers of cubic centimetres of N/10 sodium hydroxide required to titrate 10 cc of solution when phenolphthalein and methyl orange are used respectively as indicators. The fluoride ion is preferably derived from both a simple fluoride and a complex fluoride, such as fluosilicate, fluoborate, and fluotitanate. The solution may also contain 0À001-0À025% w/w nickel, cobalt, or copper as a metal accelerator, tartaric acid, citric acid, or calcium, and the free acidity may be adjusted with zinc carbonate, zinc oxide, caustic soda, or sodium carbonate. The solution is applied at a temperature of 85-130‹F., for example, by spraying. The solution is periodically replenished by a solution containing P 2 O 5 = 1, Zn = 0À2-0À7, ClO 3 = 0À01-0À15, NO 3 = 0À01-0À08, and F = 0À02-0À08. Specification 1296883 is referred to.
