558,926. Coating and pickling metals; electrolysis; etching. BOWEN, E. WINDSOR-. July 23, 1942, No. 10315. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups III, XVI and XXXVI] In the treatment of an aluminium or aluminium base alloy surface, preparatory to applying an adherent coating, the surface is first treated with an alkali metal carbonate-chromate aqueous solution also containing an alkali metal chlorate to produce an oxide coating and, optionally, to etch the surface and then removing the oxide: coating by treating with an aqueous solution of an acid. If a paint, enamel or lacquer coating is to be applied a chromic acid solution is used, but if a metallic coating is to be applied, e.g. an electrodeposited coating of nickel, nitric acid is used. Specification 528,748 is referred to.
