Abstract

In a process of electroless coating magnesium and/or iron, steel, copper or brass with tin, the metals are contacted with an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal pyrophosphate and a stannate and in the case of the metals other than magnesium they are also in continuous or intermittent contact with an anodic metal, such as magnesium, which is below sodium in the EMF series. The coating solution contains 37-60 g/l. of potassium or sodium stannate (K2SnO3.3H2O), 30-100 g/l. of tetra sodium pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7), 0-12.5 g/l. NaOH or KOH to give a pH value of 12-13.2 and 0-30 g/l. of potassium, sodium or ammonium acetate. The metal surfaces are first cleaned and may then be given an activated pickle in phosphoric acid-ammonium acid fluoride. With the acetate in the coating solution this activated pickle may be avoided. Coating is carried out by immersion, brushing or spraying with the solution at 80-85 DEG C., and in the case of the iron, steel, copper or brass the plating is carried out so that the metal is in contact with an anodic metal, e.g. a barrel plating process in which the barrel is lined with magnesium. The coated metal is then neutralized by immersion in an aqueous 5% ammonium acid fluoride solution or an aqueous 5% sodium bifluoride solution. U.S.A. Specification 2,901,409 is referred to.
