Abstract

In a method of treating the surface of aluminium or aluminium alloys, the surface is immersed in a hot aqueous solution prepared by dissolving in water 4 to 8 ozs. per gallon of an alkali metal hydroxide and at least 6 ozs. per gallon of tin chloride until it is uniformly covered, removing the surface, washing it and rinsing it in a bath of concentrated nitric and sulphuric acids until the coloration is removed and finally washing it. The amount of alkali may be adjusted to give a delay of 2 to 3 seconds before evolution of gas occurs at a temperature above 60 DEG C., preferably 95-90 DEG C. The alkali bath may also contain copper and ferric chlorides, the latter particularly when the alloy contains magnesium and the quantity may vary as the magnesium content of the alloy. The acid bath may also contain hydrochloric or chromic acid and copper and zinc ions, these metallic ions being introduced by the addition of 2 to 3 ozs. per gallon of brass. A thin film of tin is produced on the surface and other metals may be deposited electrolytically thereon either with or without an initial coating of zinc. The tin coating may also be protected by a coating of paint or lacquer.
