798,082. Drawing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., HANDS, S., and FREUND, A. O. F. Dec. 1, 1954 [Oct. 9, 1953], No. 34771/54. Divided out of 798,081. Class 83( 4). [Also in Group XXXVI] In drawing titanium or titanium base alloy rod, &c., the material to be drawn is provided with an adherent electrodeposited coating of silver or silver base alloy to form a lubricantretaining layer. The thickness of the silver coating, which may be stripped on completion of the drawing operations, must not be reduced below 0.0005 inch during drawing and to ensure this the partly drawn material is, if necessary, replated at a convenient intermediate stage. As an example, a 0.5 inch diameter descaled titanium rod, after treatment in boiling hydrochloric acid, was plated with a silver coating 0.005 inch in thickness and cold drawn in a series of 10 per cent drafts with an anneal in air at 700‹ C. every third die until diameter of 0.165 inch was reached. The material was then cleaned in trichlorethylene vapour, cathodically degreased, given a slight anodic etch in a mixture of sodium cyanide and caustic soda and replated with 0.005 of silver. Drawing was then continued with regular annealing as before, the final thickness of the wire being 0.018 inch.
