Abstract

667,369. Making wire for reinforcing rubber. AMERICAN STEEL & WIRE CO. OF NEW JERSEY. Aug. 10, 1948 [Sept. 30, 1947], No. 21089/48. Class 83 (ii). In a process for producing steel-reinforced rubber articles, the reinforcing steel is made by cleaning the metal, coating it with a copper base alloy and then cold working it to the required size and shape, after which it is bonded to the rubber in known manner. High carbon steel wire containing between 0.5 and 1.0 per cent carbon and between 0.6 and 1.25 per cent manganese is annealed by heating to between 1450‹ and 1900‹ F. and quenching in a lead bath at between 800‹ and 1100‹ F. The thin film of oxide produced by the annealing is removed by an acid pickling bath and the wire electroplated with a copper-base alloy of such thickness that the weight is from one to fifty grams per kilogram of steel wire and preferably from 1.5 to 3.5 grams per kilogram. The coating may contain 50 to 90 per cent copper and 10 to 50 per cent zinc or 80 to 95 per cent copper and 5 to 20 per cent tin, but the preferred composition is 65 to 75 per cent copper and 25 to 35 per cent zinc. The coated wire is then cold drawn to reduce its cross-section by at least 10 per cent.
