Cased forms; tubes. - In making cold drawn metal tubes &c., the billet after pointing and pickling is plated prior to drawing by immersing in molten lead or alloy thereof through a supernatant molten flux consisting of zinc chloride or zinc chloride with 20 per cent of sodium chloride, so as to impart a highly polished non-oxidizable surface. The coating serves as a lubricant and prevents superficial hardening. If an annealed tube is required the drawn coated tube is then heated and cooled in a reducing atmosphere, and the tube then given a light pass through the draw-bench to restore the polish. In drawing a light walled tube, e.g. 24 or 26 gauge, which requires eight or more passes, the tube is plated a second time, usually at the end of the fifth pass. In the case of a boiler tube requiring an extra heavy lead coating, the tube is first drawn uncoated to within <1>/16 inch of required size and then annealed, pickled. and lead plated and finished with a light pass through a draw-bench.
