Abstract
Prior to porcelain or vitreous enamelling, an aluminium or aluminium-base alloy surface is cleaned with an inhibited alkali solution having a pH below 12, deoxidized, coated with a chromate conversion coating and rinsed. Specifically, the surface is cleaned with a soda ash/caustic soda solution inhibited with trisodium phosphate, rinsed with water, deoxidized with phosphoric acid, rinsed with water, chromate-coated using a solution containing hexavalent chromium ions and fluoride ions (of which Examples are given), rinsed with water, optionally dried, and finally enamelled. Three aluminium alloys given by way of example contain, in per cent by weight: <TABS:0814787/II/1> Specification 769,143 is referred to.
