Abstract
An aluminium surface is prepared for vitreous enamelling by first forming thereon an adherent coating by treating it with a dilute aqueous solution of chromic acid (2 to 10 grams per litre) containing the fluoride ion (0.5 to 6 grams per litre), the coating being dried (at from room temperature to 65 DEG C.) before the vitreous enamel is applied. The fluoride ion may be introduced as a simple fluoride, fluoborate, bifluoride, silicofluoride, fluotitanate or fluozirconate.
