Abstract

In a process for the porcelain enamelling of ferrous metal objects, the objects are (1) pickled for 3-15 minutes at 160-212 DEG F. in an aqueous solution containing 5-20% by weight of citric acid or 1-20% by weight of glycollic acid, together with 0.0012-0.0030 moles/gallon of alkali metal thiosulphate or 0.0018-0.0042 moles/gallon of alkali metal sulphite, (2) coated with nickel, (3) coated with a porcelain enamel slip, (4) dried at 250-400 DEG F., and (5) baked at 1300-1500 DEG F. for 2-6 minutes. The nickel coating is deposited from a nickel sulphate bath preferably maintained at a pH of 2.8-3.6 by the addition of acid. Following the nickel deposition, the object may be neutralized in a solution containing borax and soda-ash. Specification 886,361 is referred to.
