Abstract

880,188. Tin plate. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 3, 1959 [Dec. 11, 1958], No. 41157/69. Class 41. Electro-tin plated steel sheet after stabilizing with chromic acid solution, is treated with a reducing agent, e.g. an aqueous dilute solution of citric acid or SnCl 2 . The product is more easily coated with lacquer and "eye-holes" are prevented. In a suitable plant, tin plate in the form of continuous strip is, after heat treatment and quenching by water spray, fed into an electrolytic bath 11 containing chromic acid, washed in a bath 12, and then passes into a bath 13 containing about 1% of citric acid or acidified SnCl 2 solution, where it is treated at 160 ‹ F. for up to 1 second, and is then dried and oiled before coiling. It is stated that the reducing bath 13 removes any free hexa-valent chromium.
