Abstract

A dry composition capable of dissolving in an acid aqueous solution to produce a metal-finishing coating composition, comprises 90 parts by weight of a water soluble dichromate (calculated as Na2Cr2 O72H2O), 3-10 parts by weight of a non-hygroscopic, water-soluble, inorganic, metal sulphate (calculated as NA2SO4) and an amount of a water-soluble, non-hygroscopic, inorganic reducing agent, incapable of forming insoluble sulphates in acid solution, sufficient to reduce 0.5-5 per cent of the hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium in acid solution. A lower aliphatic carboxylic acid salt soluble in aqueous acidic solution may also be present. The preferred components are sodium dichromate, sodium sulphate, sodium sulphite and sodium acetate. Other reducing agents include sodium hydrosulphite, potassium sulphite, thiosulphate and hydrosulphite, ammonium sulphite, thiosulphate and hydrosulphate and sodium peroxide; and instead of sodium acetate, sodium propionate or butyrate may be used. The composition may be dissolved in aqueous solutions of sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acids or mixtures thereof and may be used for the treatment of zinc, cadmium and zinc-copper alloy surfaces. Subsequently the surfaces may be treated with aqueous solutions of alkali metal hydroxides, carbonates or silicates; in particular with a solution of an alkali containing sodium, potassium, magnesium or ammonium sulphate with or without dextrose. Specifications 636,954, 680,435 and 762,103 are referred to.
