Abstract

Protective surface films are produced on articles made of, or coated with, zinc or zinc alloys by treatment with an aqueous chromicsulphuric acid mixture containing prior to use, a proportion of the chromium in the trivalent condition, the latter preferably being produced by the addition of a reducing agent which does not introduce an undesirable foreign metal into the mixture such as an aldehyde or a sugar or an inorganic substance such as sulphur dioxide or an alkali sulphite, hydrosulphite or hypophosphite. To prevent over-reduction in the mixture, a proportion of an oxidising agent which does not introduce an undesirable foreign metal into the solution and which is sufficient to convert only part of the trivalent chromium into the hexavalent form is added. Example of such an agent is an alkali nitrate, nitrite, chlorate, perchlorate, perborate or persulphate. The mixture may also contain a wetting agent such as a sulphonated fatty alcohol or ester and also an acid inhibitor such as thioureas or quinoline compounds. When the materials are used in the dry form for preparation of the solution, an alkali bisulphate is used instead of sulphuric acid and the chromic acid p in the form of an alkali chromate or bichromate and the reducing, and wetting agents and also the inhibitor in the solid form. Zinc alloys containing not less than 85 per cent. of zinc and copper and/or aluminium are referred to.
