Abstract

A ferrous surface is provided with a tightly adherent coating, which is of particular value in facilitating the cold-working of steel, by treatment with an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of a reducing oxygen-containing acid of sulphur, e.g. ammonium sulphite, thiosulphate or polythionates. The surfaces are preferably degreased, e.g. with a fatty alcohol sulphonate, before treatment. Oxidation of the coating may be prevented by storing the coated articles in dry air or dipping them into the lubricants used for a subsequent cold-working operation, to which lubricants may be added a thickening agent, e.g. methyl cellulose or cellulose glycolate, and chemicals which prevent oxidation, e.g. hydroquinone.
