Abstract

788,863. Treating wood to imitate walnut. COHEN, S., and MAURICE, P. Feb. 14, 1956 [March 9, 1955], No. 6876/55. Class 140. Tchitola wood or veneers cut therefrom are stained with an aqueous solution of an iron salt whereby the wood assumes the colour of walnut. The staining may be effected by dipping veneers in the iron salt solution and stacking the moist veneers prior to drying to allow penetration of the solution, and, if desired, this may be repeated, stacking the veneers in a position inverted with respect to the first stacking, or the veneers may be immersed in the solution in a chamber under pressure with or without the prior application of vacuum to remove air trapped between the veneers. The iron salts employed may be ferrous sulphate, ferrous ammonium sulphate, ferric sulphate, ferric ammonium sulphate, ferric potassium sulphate, or ferric chloride used singly or in admixture and may contain non-ionic or anionic dispersing agents. If desired, a modified colour may be obtained by treating the stained wood with an acid or acid salt solution to partially reverse the colour change due to staining, either after drying the stained wood or by subsequently adding the acid or acid salt solution to the staining bath.
