Abstract
An aqueous pickling and descaling composition comprises sulphuric, hydrochloric and phosphoric acids, oxalic acid or an oxalate, a chromium salt and a wetting agent. The following two compositions are given by way of example, the first being a liquid and the second yielding a paste after evaporation of water: ..I.II .Sulphuric acid.0.20 litre.12.5 litres .Hydrochloric acid.0.10 litre.7.5 litres .Phosphoric acid.0.05 litre.2.5 litres .Oxalic acid.-.3.kg .Ammonium oxalate.7 grams.- .Chromium alum.5 grams.250 grams .Wetting agent (e.g. sodium.. .arylalkylsulphonate).1 gram.50 grams .Colouring matter (e.g... .Bordeaux red).1 gram.- .Glycerol.-.5 litres .Kaolin.-.15 kg .Water.0.65 litre.15 litres After pickling, the metal may be rinsed with water and then washed with a neutralizing liquid containing sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium arylalkylsulphonate. Spraying apparatus is disclosed, the metal to be pickled being sprayed in a container provided with apertures so that the liquids may be drained off and re-used.
