Abstract
Ferrous metal surfaces are cleaned with an aqueous solution containing 1-20% citric or glycolic acid at 160-212 DEG F. for 5-30 minutes. Nickel is deposited and then a coating of porcelain enamel which is dried at 250-400 DEG F. and fired for 3-6 minutes at 1300-1550 DEG F. Citric acid pickled surfaces are given a nickel deposit of 0,03-0,1 grams per square foot while those pickled in glycolic acid receive a deposit of 0,12-0,36 grams per square foot, the deposition being performed in a solution of nickel sulphate at a pH of 3,2-3,6. The citric of glycolic acid solution may contain 1-4% of phosphoric acid.
